The CREST (Critical Enabling Skills Training) was launched as a Singapore national initiative a number of years ago. It is worthwhile to remember those occasionally. It is very useful 'checklist' when coaching your staff, as it helps to articulate areas of development.
Here are the CREST Skills. Of course, I want to make my contribution as well and I have added one more skill (below)
LEARNING-TO-LEARN: independently learn and use new knowledge and skills to meet changing needs.
LITERACY: raise proficiency in reading, writing and computation to interpret, analyse and effectively use complex information.
LISTENING AND ORAL COMMUNICATION: learn from co-workers and customers, understand needs and develop focused business relationships.
PROBLEM-SOLVING AND CREATIVITY go beyond conventional approaches, see creative solutions and make the leap to innovation.
PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS: take responsibility for self-development, personal performance and goals within the organization.
GROUP EFFECTIVENESS: use the team’s skills and talents to achieve common goals and build relationships.
ORGANISATION EFFECTIVENESS AND LEADERSHIP: initiate and communicate change to achieve commitment to the organisation’s goals.
One more skill needs to be added and that is BASIC MATH. We are living in world of limited resources. So anything must be scrutinized if it is 'money wise'. If it is not 'money wise' then I put my money somewhere else. That is true for my private as well as business life.
Some examples
- The ability to work out the interest p.a. compared to a marketing offer (consumer loans, investment product etc.)
- Return of investment calculation
- Reading a profit & loss statement (every manger must be able to do this)
- Working out the price increase in % if the price increases form $ 625 to $ 800
- How much do you cost the company per hour vs. how much should you earn for the company per hour
- and many more
