This is not the first time that I write about this subject. Nevertheless, I want to share with you two quotes from successful business people highlighting again how important it is for success in business to bring up the real issue, as it is, candidly.
The first was an interesting article in the Singapore Business Times, Weekend 09-10 April 2011 featuring Scott Morris MD Asean of NetApp on building a corporate culture
One suggestions to build a corporate culture was and I quote ‘Candour is encouraged’ - In a growing organisation like NetApp it is critical to remain open with our team. For example it is unacceptable in our organisation to leave a meeting and then talk about what you did not agree with. Organisations need to make people comfortable with candour, regardless of their place in the company hierarchy. Encourage employees to share whatever is on their mind. This will encourage an open and honest culture ….. Unquote
Another example was an article about Sergio Marchionne CEO of Fiat and on the board of many other MNC’s featured in the German business magazine ‘Wirtchaftswoche’ Week12/2011.
He was quoted as saying: ‘When honesty and clarity for certain subjects are being mistaken for inconsideration, then we have a problem’.
Suggested action: Nobody likes to bring bad news (Examples: I can’t meet the deadline. I am below target.) Also, often staff likes to be polite or subtle expressing things in a roundabout way carrying the risk that the listener doesn’t really understand the true issue. Therefor it is important to consistently educate your staff about the importance of expressing issues crystal clear and directly.
