Goal setting is not rocket science, though here are some important tips.
The cycle of goal setting is always the same:
Step 1. Plan for the long-term goal
Step 2. Plan the action to be taken on a weekly or monthly basis
Step 3. Have the discipline and energy to do it
Step 4. Review frequently and adjust as needed
The above is a cycle. When you are at ‘Step 4. Review’ you may reach certain conclusion which may lead you to have a look at ‘Step 1.’ again and possibly reformulate your goal, often more ambitious than before, or changing to a different direction because of a new opportunity.
All for steps are important to goal setting. All must be addressed in order to achieve success, though to me, it is very important that
I SPEND 80% OF MY TIME IN STEP 3. - HAVING THE DISCIPLINE AND ENERGY TO GET THINGS DONE.
Why is it so important? Because when attending to steps 1. & 2. & 4. you are mainly talking, thinking, discussing, strategizing, meetings, planning etc. These are all important activities, but these don’t involve any action, bringing you closer to your goal. Nothing gets really done. And there is only so much you can do to plan, think, prepare etc. So, Step. 3 is the one where progress in the real world takes place.
Go one step further and ask yourself, what are the most important action items you can do in order to achieve your success? I give you an example from my business. You have to find your own. For me the most important is
1. Researching and improving seminars
2. Delivering seminars
3. Selling seminars
If I spend 80% of my time doing this, then I am doing well. I suggest, find your own ‘high impact’ activities and spend 80% of your time doing exactly this.
