What happens in your company if a staff is being caught stealing $1000? In most companies, that would lead to instant dismissal.
Now I can tell you a lot of behaviours that would cost a company S$1000 every week and there is no consequence to the staff.
And this leads me to the point of having company values. I still fail to understand that many managers and companies, that is a clear impression that I get from my seminar participants, don’t pay high attention to company values. Values define how or according to what standards everybody in the company conducts themselves.
The wrong behaviours lead to inefficiency and / or unethical behaviour. And that is damaging to your business.
The challenge is only if somebody steals S$1000 it is easy to measure. Lack of teamwork, disrespects, keeping ideas can do much more damage. It is just much more difficult to grasp it. Nevertheless, it can be done.
For how to go about values, please refer to my entry in this blog dated 28 July 2010.
And not to forget ‘Living the values’ must enter the appraisal system. I would start with 80% of the KPI’s should be based on performance and 20% based on living the values. Only 20% for ‘Living the values’ does not mean it is worth so much less. I just think that it needs some time to gain relevant experience with the concept and to find traction in the company.
