I like swimming. For family reasons, we frequently holiday in Switzerland. And one of the highlights is to swim across lakes. Of course, you only want to do that when you have the confidence to swim 2 km comfortably.
I like skiing. I am not that good, but I can enjoy a reasonably difficult downhill slope, giving me great excitement. Of course, again, you can only enjoy this subject to a good skill and fitness level.
What is my point? The point is, if you really want to have fun, you must be good first.
The same is true at work. You want to be good at your job? You want to be good in team-work or management?
Then there is a need to work hard to get yourself to a competent level. Putting in big efforts to learn, to practice, to prepare in order to master the key skills is essential. There is no short-cut. It is hard work first. Fun and success will follow.
In reverse, if we don’t work hard to attain the key skills, dispensing of our work responsibilities becomes unpleasant and frustrating and eats away our self-confidence. Because, deep inside we always know if we are good or not.
Try to figure out, if it needs to be, with the help of your boss. Where is it that you need to improve your competence, skill, or mind-set? When you ask for advice, please be open minded. Since you will be asking for areas of improvement people will point out your weakness. We don’t like to hear this. But, please listen and take advice. Then work on it hard. Fun will follow.
