Hurray, I just got a training assignment from a very reputable company.
Here is what happened. A few weeks ago I was at a networking event where I met the HRD Manager of this particular company. Networking is an important sales activity for me in order to find new clients. I followed up by asking for an appointment in order to introduce my company to them. The HRD Manager was courteous and agreed to a meeting. There was no immediate outcome of the meeting. As it happened, another manager from the same company saw me in the meeting room and said ‘hello’ to me. He recognized me as we cooperated on a project many years ago. He was in a hurry so we just exchanged some friendly words.
Following that, I thought that it is good idea to stay in touch with him and paid him another visit. As it turned out, this gentleman is in charge of organizing tailor-made training programs for some business units within their organization and he had a project on hand which was in line with my area of competence. Then the usual process, I got a briefing on their training requirements, made my proposal, followed up with a presentation to all the decision makers and then I got the business.
Lucky order? Yes and no. My reading is – Do persistently a thorough job so that you can give luck a chance to strike.
Which reminds me of this little joke. David was always praying to win the lottery. Again and again, he is praying and one day there was a thunderous voice coming from above: ‘David, give me chance. You never bought a lottery ticket. Buy a ticket so that I have a chance to help you.’
